25 Youth Leaders from all over the World undergo Leadership training in the U.S.
Singaporean, Ikram, who travelled to the United States on the prestigious International Visitor Leadership Programme run by the U.S. State Department on behalf of the American people, joined 25 other participants to learn the concepts of democracy, government and citizenship and their importance to American civil society.
Ikram and his group visited model programmes that promote civic awareness and youth leadership such as schools, colleges, associations, youth clubs, sports and arts programmes as well as interfaith-initiatives. Throughout the 20 days, the group was taught the skills necessary for becoming future leaders and discuss methods to be used to develop these skills in critical thinking, decision-making, communication and organization, and building leadership capacity: “The importance of pluralism, tolerance and volunteerism as components of civic life in the United States will be emphasized in this programme”
The group began the programme in Washington, D.C., with a tour of the city and a briefing on current challenges faced by American youth. The group also meet with the U.S. Department of Education officials where they will learn the role of the federal government in the U.S. education system.
From D.C., the participants travelled to Nashville, Tennessee, where they participated in the Annual National Service-Learning Conference organized by National Youth Leadership Council and Volunteer Tennessee.
Participants then travelled to San Francisco to focus on activism in schools, including youth mobilization for social action and youth development skills. The group also visited an after-school project sponsored by “Team-up For Youth,” which works with local organizations creating after-school sports opportunities for youth in partnership with colleges and universities.
From there, the team broke up into team cities where Ikram travel to Cleveland, Ohio, where the team will look into various organizations working on issues of youth and economic development as a part of local grassroots democracy.
The programme wrapped up in Washington, D.C. with participants learning about U.S. foreign policy priorities at the beginning of the Obama Administration. They visited the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention to discuss research and training initiatives to guide federal juvenile justice issues and meet with the Corporation for National Community Service’s “Learn and Service America programme.”
The group comprised of participants from Armenia, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Congo, Denmark, India, Israel, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Peoples’ Republic of China, Romania and Rwanda. Others are from Serbia, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Syria, Tanzania, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, Uruguay and West Bank.
The International Visitor Leadership Programme facilitated personal and professional contacts between the people of the United States and the people from various parts of the world.
